Cobourg was Alive with the Sound of Construction in 2012 | Creative ...

Cobourg made headlines in 2012 as the year brought scores of development and expansion projects. Not only did we see and?infusion of new homes, but?businesses as well. Planners, developers and construction crews were creative in their thinking in keeping our environment in mind and?to ensure it was business as usual throughout?the town.

Thirty assistants clapped in unison as they welcomed eager shoppers at the Grand Opening of Winners. Designer and brand names in clothing, gift ware, home accents and accessories fill the?newly constructed 15,000 square foot plus store. The Cobourg location added between 40 and 60 full and part-time jobs in the retail sector.

After years of discussion and research, ground broke for the new?LCBO in the west end of the town with a Grand Opening?held in?November.??The?newly built 12,000 square foot?store?incorporated significant environmental benefits in its construction design. The store?has a selection of more than 2,100 wines, spirits, beers, ready-to-drink cocktails, coolers and beverage gift packs with 400 VINTAGES premium wines and spirits. Another 12 full-time and part-time employees were added to the retail sector. The downtown location is still in operation.

The largest project was the multi-phase reconstruction of the Midtown Mall on Division Street which houses anchor stores such as No Frills and York Super Pharmacy?with other smaller establishments.

The Toyota auto dealership took a green approach to their expansion and reconstruction facility at?Division and Elgin Streets.? A?50,000 litre cistern to collect rain from the roof, super insulation, skylights in the garage and air operated doors to close ?super fast? are among the features of the environmentally friendly dealership, a fourth such environmentally built facility in the Toyota chain in Ontario.

We also saw growth in residential development. The well established New Amherst and West Park Village subdivision are entering their fourth phase. The developers are creating an 8.5 acre linear park which will include a fully accessible playground and walking trails. Other subdivisions, peppered throughout the town, are seeing significant addition to their developments such as Parkview Hills and?Ryerson Commons with new developers adding to the housing markets.
