Smartphones power record Samsung profit of $5.9 billion during Apple lull

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co, the world's top technology firm by revenue, reported on Friday a record operating profit of $5.9 billion for the June quarter, as rampant Galaxy S handset sales helped stretch its lead over Apple Inc.

September quarter mobile profits are expected to forge further ahead as the latest Galaxy model enjoys a sales boom before the next iPhone launch, widely expected in October, driving Samsung's profit to a record of nearly 8 trillion won ($7 billion). The mobile business brings in around 60 percent of Samsung's earnings.

Profits of the handset division more than doubled from a year earlier and the flat-screen business swung to a profit as LCD prices stabilized.

Shares in Samsung, which also makes TVs and other appliances, flat-screens, and chips, jumped as much as 4.7 percent to a five-week high after the results, outperforming the wider market.

"Solid results from the TV division show its resilience to the euro zone crisis, while the mobile division has become a strong cash cow on the back of strong Galaxy sales," said Seo Won-seok, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities.

"Weak memory chip prices remain the biggest concern for Samsung in the third quarter, but it will again fare better than rivals as its reliance on Apple, which tends to squeeze suppliers quite a bit, is small compared to the likes of Hynix and Toshiba. It'll have less margin pressure."

JK Shin, head of Samsung's telecoms business, told Reuters on Sunday that sales of the Galaxy S III, the most aggressive competitor to the iPhone, were better than his initial forecast of at least 10 million units in the first two months after its launch in late May.

It is also preparing a sequel to the popular phone-cum-tablet Galaxy Note later this year to counter Apple's new product releases.

Samsung, which earlier this year ended Nokia's 14-year reign as the top global handset maker, is estimated to have increased smartphone shipments to 50.5 million in the June quarter, nearly double the 26 million iPhones sold.

Apple shipments in the June quarter tumbled 26 percent sequentially as the European economy sagged and consumers held off on buying ahead of the release of the iPhone 5.

"Regardless of Apple's performance, Samsung will be strong in the third quarter," said Byun Han-joon, an analyst at KB Investment & Securities. "Actually, for Samsung, Apple's stumble is a chance."

Analysts estimated that Samsung, which now controls more than a third of the global smartphone market, will sell 15 million to 20 million of its Galaxy S III in the September quarter.

PATENT BATTLE

Samsung, valued at $160 billion and the world's leading maker of TVs, said April-June operating profit totaled 6.72 trillion won ($5.9 billion), in line with guidance it issued earlier this month.

That is up 79 percent from a year ago and 15 percent from the previous record - 5.85 trillion won in the March quarter.

Still, its net profit of 5.2 trillion won ($4.5 billion) is only half of the $8.8 billion Apple returned in the last quarter from its iPhone, iPad and Mac computer sales.

Samsung's gross margin of 37 percent also lags Apple's 43 percent.

The two technology giants, locked in bruising patent battle globally, will begin a jury trial in federal court in San Jose, California on Monday. Apple seeks roughly $2.5 billion in damages, plus permanent injunctions on some Samsung phones and tablets, while Samsung is demanding patent royalty payments.

Samsung said it expected its third quarter - July to September - to be marginally positive as demand for consumer electronic goods, including smartphones and tablets remains strong.

However, it said it expected weak demand for PC DRAM to continue in the third quarter.

Song Myung-sub, a senior analyst at HI Investment & Securities, said chip earnings might pull back slightly in the third quarter.

"But the increase in demand for its products from Microsoft Windows 8 release in September and the iPhone in October will bring demand higher than supply," Song said.

Profit from the telecoms division more than doubled to 4.19 trillion won from a year earlier 1.71 trillion won, with sales of 50.5 million smartphones - or 380 every minute.

Its semiconductor business showed a small decline in profit to 1.1 trillion won from 1.79 trillion won, following weak demand for NAND memory chips and computer memory chips.

Prices of NAND flash memory chips tumbled 46 percent in the first half of this year following a 34 percent plunge last year, forcing Toshiba Corp to cut output by 30 percent.

The flat screen division swung to a small profit of 750 billion won from a year earlier loss of 210 billion won after a global fall in LCD (liquid crystal display) prices stabilized.

The TV and home appliances business returned 760 billion won, up from 470 billion won. Analysts have said the business has been buoyed by solid sales of high-end TV models with 3D and Internet connectivity features.

While the next iPhone will likely slow Samsung's handset earnings growth, it will boost the Korean firm's semiconductor earnings as Samsung is the sole producer of processing chips used to power the iPhone and iPad, and also supplies Apple with mobile memory chips, NAND flash and display screens.

Past rivals return to 'Dancing' for new season

BEVERLY HILL, Calif. (AP) ? "Dancing with the Stars" is repeating some steps for its fall season.

An "All-Star" edition of the ABC competition show will bring back 12 former rivals including Pamela Anderson, Kirstie Alley and Bristol Palin.

Former 'NSync member Joey Fatone and gymnast Shawn Johnson will also be returning, ABC announced Friday.

Other contestants include:

? "General Hospital" star Kelly Monaco.

? Former 98 Degrees boy-band member Drew Lachey.

? Super Bowl champ Emmitt Smith.

Iran: Strait Of Hormuz Under Control, No Plans To Close

TEHRAN, Iran -- A top Iranian naval commander said Monday that Tehran's forces have full control over the Gulf's strategic Strait of Hormuz, but have no plans to try to close the route for one-fifth of the world's oil.

The comments by Adm. Ali Reza Tangsiri, acting commander of the Revolutionary Guard naval forces, appear designed to reinforce Iran's claims of military dominance over the Strait as U.S. naval forces boost their presence in the Gulf.

"Enemies regularly say Iran is after closing the Strait of Hormuz. But we say that wisdom does not recommend closing the strait while Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz," Tangsiri was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

He did not elaborate, but the remarks appear to point to Iran's efforts to build pipelines to Asian markets and develop other Iranian ports with direct access to the Indian Ocean.

Tangsiri's message also is seen as an effort to reassure world oil markets that Iran ? which was OPEC's second-largest producer before recent sanctions ? will not disrupt supplies. Oil prices have been swayed by worries that Iran could choke off tanker traffic in retaliation for tighter sanctions over its nuclear program.

Iran has issued threats to close the strait for several months, but has made no attempts to block tanker traffic. Iran's warnings have increased this month after a boycott of Iranian oil by the 27-nation European Union, which has sharply cut into Iran's oil sales.

Last week, a group of Iranian lawmakers backed proposals that would push government to close the waterway. Yet, Iran's parliament has not taken any action on the case and it's unclear whether lawmakers could force such a military move on the strait, which is jointly controlled by Iran and Oman.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon. Iran says it only seeks reactors for peaceful purposes such as power generation and medical treatment.

The travel insurance benefit you?re referring to is called ?financial default,? which is the complete suspension of operations due to financial circumstances.

There are a few things that are important to note about this coverage.

First, some policies require an operator to have filed bankruptcy in order to claim the benefit. Others do not require bankruptcy, as long as all operations have ceased. Be aware that many policies have a limit on the time between making the initial trip deposit and purchasing the coverage. Many policies also require that a minimum amount of time passes between purchasing the coverage and the financial default of an operator. Finally, review a policy?s definition of ?common carrier,? ?travel provider,? or ?tour provider,? as there may be differences in coverage based on this.

Now, to answer your question: In the event that you need to make a travel insurance claim under the financial default benefit, you would need to obtain some sort of statement or record which gave evidence of financial default. If you were able to book travel with a business prior to leaving home, chances are that they were legitimate and there should be a record of their financial default. Remember to keep receipts for all prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses because if you file a claim, you will be required to provide proof of payment.

Wiggins in command on Tour after time-trial win

BESANCON, France (AP) ? If Monday's time trial at the Tour de France was "the test of truth" ? as one top rider called it ? then Bradley Wiggins aced it.

The Olympic champion, aiming to be the first British winner of cycling's showcase race, sped to victory in the first big time trial, tightening his grip on the yellow jersey.

"That was my physical best out there," he said. "It's probably my best time trial ever."

The race against the clock is a discipline Wiggins loves. And it showed in the ninth stage, a 25.8-mile ride from Arc-et-Senans to Besancon. He finished 35 seconds ahead of Sky teammate Christopher Froome, the runner-up.

Defending champion Cadel Evans of Australia, seen as Wiggins' most formidable rival, was a disappointing sixth. He called Wiggins and Froome "very, very, very strong riders."

A day earlier, Evans was all too aware of the stakes in the time trial: "Tomorrow is the test of truth. It's each with their own two legs," he said.

Evans was 1:43 behind. He remains second overall, trailing Wiggins by 1:53. Froome rose to third, from sixth, and is 2:07 behind his teammate.

"I was really motivated ? the time trial is my thing," Wiggins said, adding he had worked hard on his riding position, breathing and study of the course. "I am very happy now."

Overall, Italy's Vincenzo Nibali is fourth, 2:23 behind. Russia's Denis Menchov is fifth, 3:02 back, and Spain's Haimar Zubeldia is sixth, 3:19 off the pace.

Wiggins has been the favorite since a dazzling stretch of three stage-race victories this season. At the Tour, he was fourth in 2009 and 24th in 2010, just behind Lance Armstrong, riding in his final Tour. He crashed out last year.

As this 99th Tour continues, Sky is likely to shelter Wiggins in the flats and escort him up Alps and Pyrenees climbs by pressing the pace with him in their draft, trying to wear out rivals.

Then it will be up to Wiggins to deliver solo again in the next-to-last stage ? an even longer, 33-mile time trial from Bonneval to Chartres before an often-celebratory ride to the Champs-Elysees finish.

Wiggins insists the three-week race is far from over, saying a crash or illness could douse his victory hopes. He also noted that Evans has promised to fight to the finish.

"It's never over until the fat lady sings, and she hasn't entered the building yet," Wiggins said.

But the stage raises questions about whether Evans ? or anyone else ? can challenge Wiggins and his team, which has shown strength in both the climbs and time trials that often determine the Tour winner.

For the Australian, it will mean trying to attack on the climbs. Two uphill finishes remain, one each in the Alps ? on Thursday ? and the Pyrenees next week.

For Wiggins, the task may be psychological: Holding the yellow jersey for nearly two weeks comes with mental strain, for the rider and his teammates.

If Wiggins goes the rest of the way in yellow, it would mark the first time only two riders had worn the leader's jersey in a Tour since Armstrong took it from Estonia's Jaan Kirsipuu en route to winning the first of his seven titles in 1999.

Wiggins, who has the support of Froome in his title quest, entered the stage looking to move up in the overall standings, a stage victory not his top priority.

"My goal was to get a minute on Cadel. ... I've come away with a bit more than that, it's a bonus," Wiggins said. "Winning the stage is like Christmas ? it's brilliant."

Riders set off one by one down the starter's ramp for the time trial. By the first time check, just more than 10 miles, Evans was more than a minute slower than Wiggins, but was able to limit the damage.

On one of the warmest days so far this Tour, many riders crossed the finish with white spittle ringing their lips, a sign of dehydration. Unlike usual road stages, time trials require solo efforts, placing additional importance on form, concentration and rhythm.

Evans was "a little bit disappointed," but insisted the Tour wasn't over. "I rode not my best time trial, but certainly not a bad one," he said.

Evans acknowledges he faces a bigger hurdle than he did last year, when he overcame a 57-second deficit to Andy Schleck in the final time trial a day before the finish. The Tour "hasn't been optimal" so far, he said, and he is "not in the best position to be in compared to last year."

Meanwhile, confidence was rising at Sky. Team sports director Sean Yates said Wiggins "took quite a chunk off Cadel."

"It's not going to be easy for Cadel," Yates added, saying the possibilities of the Australian regaining time are "relatively limited ... but we all know he'll keep fighting. He's an ex-world champion. ... There will never be a lack of respect."

Tejay Van Garderen, a BMC teammate of Evans, surprised even himself with a fourth-place finish, 1:06 behind Wiggins. Van Garderen rose to eighth overall, from 17th, and is 5:14 behind Wiggins.

The 24-year American was nine seconds slower than third-place Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, one of the world's top time trial riders. The Swiss star won the opening-day time trial and wore the yellow shirt for seven days until Wiggins captured it Saturday.

Cancellara fell out of the running for the yellow shirt Sunday, finishing nearly 12 minutes behind Wiggins. He's not as strong a climber as Wiggins, Evans or Nibali.

After 10 straight days of racing, the pack of 178 riders gets its first rest day Tuesday. The field then faces two hard days in the Alps, including a summit finish Thursday that is likely to shake up the standings on the way to the July 22 finish in Paris.
