(AP) ? Britain ordered Iran on Wednesday to remove all its diplomats from the U.K. within 48 hours following attacks on its embassy and a residential compound in Tehran ? one of the most significant diplomatic retaliations against Iran since the 1979 U.S. embassy crisis.

Foreign Secretary William Hague told the House of Commons that Britain had also withdrawn its entire diplomatic staff from Iran after angry mobs hauled down Union Jack flags, torched a vehicle and tossed looted documents through windows.

The rare move to kick out a country's entire diplomatic corps marks a significant souring of ties between Iran and the West, amid deepening suspicions over Tehran's pursuit of nuclear weapons. Tensions were heightened in October when U.S. officials accused agents linked to Iran's Quds Force ? an elite wing of the powerful Revolutionary Guard ? of a role in an alleged plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to the U.S.

Germany, France and the Netherlands all recalled their ambassadors from Iran late Wednesday for consultations on further action in response. Norway closed its embassy in Tehran as a precaution.

For many, the hours-long assault Tuesday on the British embassy in Tehran was reminiscent of the chaotic seizure of the U.S. embassy there in 1979. Protesters replaced the British flag with a banner in the name of a 7th-century Shiite saint, Imam Hussein, and one looter showed off a picture of Queen Elizabeth II apparently taken off a wall.

"The idea that the Iranian authorities could not have protected our embassy or that this assault could have taken place without some degree of regime consent is fanciful," Hague told lawmakers.

Iran currently has 18 diplomats in Britain, according to Britain's foreign ministry.

Britain previously ordered Iran to remove its diplomats in 1989, when the two nations broke off ties over a fatwa, or religious edict, ordering Muslims to kill British author Salman Rushdie because his novel "The Satanic Verses" allegedly insulted Islam.

The White House strongly condemned the attacks and European Union foreign ministers were meeting Thursday to consider possible new sanctions. Hague also praised Poland, Russia, China and the UAE for offering support and expressing their concern.

The French foreign ministry said it was moved to act "in the face of this flagrant and unacceptable violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations and the gravity of the violence."

Italy's foreign minister Giulio Terzi said Rome was also evaluating whether to keep its diplomatic presence in Iran.

Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said Iran was placing itself "outside of the framework of international law," Hague said.

France's budget minister, Valerie Pecresse, said the EU should consider a total embargo on oil exports, or a freeze on Iranian central bank holdings. British officials said the U.K. would likely support new measures against Iran's energy sector.

Hague claimed those involved in Tuesday's attack were members of a student group allied with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's paramilitary Basij organization, which recruits heavily on university campuses.

"We should be clear from the outset that this is an organization controlled by elements of the Iranian regime," he said.

Hague told Parliament the private quarters of staff and Britain's ambassador were trashed in the attack and that diplomats' personal possessions were stolen.

"This is a breach of international responsibilities of which any nation should be ashamed," he said.

Some were alarmed by Hague's tough tone. David Miliband, Britain's former foreign secretary, said he hoped the robust words would not become "part of the very unwelcome drumbeat of war."

About 24 British embassy staff and dependents were based in Tehran. They are all adults because Britain will not post diplomats with small children to Iran for security reasons.

Iran's government has expressed regret about the "unacceptable behavior" of protesters, whose attacks began after anti-British demonstrations apparently authorized by authorities.

But Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the "wrath of (students) resulted from several decades of domination-seeking behavior of Britain."

Iran's tensions with Britain date back to the 19th century, when the Persian monarchy gave huge industrial concessions to London, which later included significant control over Iran's oil industry. In 1953, Britain and the U.S. helped organize a coup that overthrew a nationalist prime minister and restored the pro-Western shah to power.

More recently, Iran was angered by Britain's decision to honor Rushdie with a knighthood in 2007, and over its involvement in Western scrutiny of Iran's nuclear program.

In March 2007, Iran detained 15 British sailors and marines for allegedly entering the country's territorial waters in the Gulf ? a claim Britain denies. The 15 were released after nearly two weeks in captivity.

On Sunday, Iran's parliament approved a bill to downgrade relations with Britain, vowing to expel the country's ambassador.

Syria hit with new sanctions: Will this weaken Assad?

The Arab League hit Syria with sanctions Sunday. The new sanctions include a travel ban on Syrian officials and a freeze on Syria government assets.

The Arab League approved economic sanctions on Syria on Sunday to try to force Damascus to halt an eight-month crackdown on protests against President Bashar al-Assad that Qatar said may prompt international intervention.

Anti-Assad activists said there was no respite from the crackdown and security forces had killed at least 24 civilians, many in a town north of Damascus that has become a focus for protests demanding Assad's removal. Others were killed in raids on towns in the province of Homs.

Nineteen of the League's 22 members approved the decision to immediately enforce the sanctions, hailed by Britain as unprecedented. They include a travel ban on top Syrian officials and a freeze on assets related to Assad's government.

"The indications are not positive ... the sanctions are still economic but if there is no movement on the part of Syria then we have a responsibility as human beings to stop the killings," Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, told reporters.

"Power is not worth anything when a ruler kills his people," he said, adding that the sanctions were also aimed at halting dealings with Syria's central bank and investment in Syria.

Sheikh Hamad said Arab nations wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened in Libya, where a U.N. Security Council resolution led to NATO air strikes. He warned other Arab states that the West could intervene if it felt the league was not "serious."
"All the work that we are doing is to avoid this interference," he said.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the "unprecedented decision to impose sanctions demonstrates that the regime's repeated failure to deliver on its promises will not be ignored and that those who perpetrate these appalling abuses will be held to account."

Hague said Britain hoped the move would help break what he called United Nations silence "on the ongoing brutality taking place in Syria" after Russia and China thwarted Western efforts to pass a U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria.

Damascus, where the Assad family has ruled for 41 years, says regional powers helped incite the violence, which it blames on armed groups targeting civilians and its security forces.

SYMBOLIC
The president of the Union of Arab Banks, a division of the Arab League, expected the sanctions to hit Syria's central bank, which he said has "big deposits" in the region, especially the Gulf.

"Once individual countries that have voted for the sanctions issue instructions, Syrian deposits will be frozen, which will affect the financial resources of the Syrian government," Adnan Youssef told Arabiya television.

Arab ministers were spurred to action by worsening violence in Syria and by the Assad government's failure to meet a deadline to let in Arab monitors and take other steps to end its crackdown on the uprising.

"It is a symbolic but a huge step. The Arab League has tried to stop civilian killings but it failed. Now it is removing the Arab cover from the regime, which could make it easier for the international community to intervene," said opposition figure Walid al-Bunni.
"No one wants to see ordinary Syrians deprived of essential supplies. The Arabs are telling Bashar: 'You are killing the people to whom you say you belong. We will not receive you in our capitals. We're freezing your assets. We are not investing in your country,'" Bunni said from Cairo.

Conrad Murray Sentence 'Not Enough,' MJ Fans Say

But other Michael Jackson supporters outside L.A. courthouse tell MTV News 'justice has been served.'
By Katie Byrne, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

LOS ANGELES — During the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's fans have been as much a fixture at the courthouse as the Jackson family. When Murray was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday (November 29), MTV News spoke with those loyal fans outside the court to see if the maximum sentence was an apt punishment.

"Four years — not enough, but at least something," said one fan, sporting a red jacket in tribute to MJ. "And where I come from, a little something is always better than nothing."

One pair of friends might have been wearing matching Thriller T-shirts, but their opinions on Murray's sentence certainly didn't match. "If four years is the maximum and he got the maximum — I know she's not happy, but I'm happy," one of the women said, gesturing to her less-than-pleased companion. "I feel like justice was served and that L.A. can now be proud and stand tall."

"It's better than nothing, but it's not even close to justice," said another fan, wearing Jackson's trademark fedora and sequined glove. "Not only was [Murray] negligent; he let the man die. It's unconscionable. He didn't even try. How would a heart doctor not know how to give CPR? It's insane."

The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. On top of that, Legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that Murray will likely serve less than half of his four-year sentence.

Those legal loopholes concerned a female fan outside the courthouse, but she was also happy that the maximum punishment was doled out.

"The only thing I'm worried about now, with the overcrowding of the jails, he might get one year and house arrest," she told MTV News. "I'm just hoping it'll be four years, that's what I'm praying. I'm just glad that justice has been served today, and I'm glad justice can be served to the family and to the fans, and everybody around today will be happy and celebrate that justice has been served. And I'm sure Michael's looking from heaven right now."

A smarter way to make ultraviolet light beams

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2011) ? Existing coherent ultraviolet light sources are power hungry, bulky and expensive. University of Michigan researchers have found a better way to build compact ultraviolet sources with low power consumption that could improve information storage, microscopy and chemical analysis.

A paper on the research is newly published in Optics Express. The research was led by Mona Jarrahi and Tal Carmon, assistant professors in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The experiment was performed by Jeremy Moore and Matthew Tomes, both graduate students in the same department.

The researchers have optimized a type of optical resonator to take an infrared signal from relatively cheap telecommunication-compatible lasers and, using a low-power, nonlinear process, boost it to a higher-energy ultraviolet beam.

Their optical resonator is a millimeter-scale disk with a precisely engineered shape and smooth surface polishing to encourage the input beam to gain power as it circulates inside the resonator.

"We optimized the structure to achieve high gain over a broad range of optical wavelengths," Jarrahi said. "This allows us to make low-cost, wavelength-tunable ultraviolet sources using low-infrared power levels."

The researchers used their resonator to generate the fourth harmonic of the infrared beam they started with.

Like the harmonic distortions you get from new sound frequencies when you crank up a loudspeaker, engineers can generate harmonics of light by using the right materials. By pushing light beams through a nonlinear medium, they can coax out offshoot beams that are double, or in this case, quadruple the frequency and energy of the input beam, and one-quarter of the original wavelength.

Lasers get progressively more difficult to generate and more inefficient, as engineers aim for shorter wavelengths, the researchers said.

"As we go from green to blue, the efficiency of the laser goes down. Going to UV lasers is even harder," Jarrahi said. "This principle was first suggested by Einstein and is the reason why green laser pointers do not actually contain a green laser. It is actually a red laser and its wavelength is divided by two to become green light."

Ultraviolet light sources have applications in chemical detection, crisper medical imaging and finer lithography for more sophisticated integrated circuits and greater computer memory capacity.

The paper is titled "Continuous-wave ultraviolet emission through fourth-harmonic generation in a whispering-gallery resonator." The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Chevy Volt under 'formal safety investigation' by NHTSA due to post-crash fire concerns

The Chevy Volt's lithium-ion battery may be great for a lot of things -- like low gasoline-dependency, for instance -- but when it comes to government regulated crash tests, it's proving to be a fiery problem. As the story goes, back in May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration put a Volt through standard side-impact crash testing, and in doing so, "the vehicle's battery was damaged and the coolant line was ruptured." The big issue? The car went up in flames multiple weeks later, seemingly as direct result. That event prompted the NHTSA to further study the safety of the batts in the period after a crash, which culminated in more tests performed just over a week ago to find out if they would prove volatile again -- simply put, they did. The group recently explained that it's "concerned that damage to the Volt's batteries as part of three tests that are explicitly designed to replicate real-world crash scenarios have resulted in fire."

Because of this development, the NHTSA (with assistance from the Department of Defense, Department of Energy and General Motors itself) has officially launched a formal investigation into the Volt to ensure that its current battery implementation isn't a safety defect. Despite the announcement, the agency notes that of all the Volts currently zipping along the streets, there has yet to be a to be a similar incident out on the open road. The NHTSA further clarified that there's not yet any reason for current owners to worry, so long as they haven't been in an accident with their vehicle. Overall, GM describes the whole investigation as "procedural" at this point, stating that both GM has been working with the NHTSA for over six months on a "broader program designed to induce battery failure after extreme situations." Seems a bit late at this point, but in any event, you'll find full details in the press releases from both parties just past the break.

Muslim Medical Students Boycott Darwin Lectures

Don't remember his name but he commanded a small carrier in the Atlantic during WW2. He said that if a soldier prays before going into battle he is going into battle with the wrong mind set. A soldier should take charge, not leave it up the fate/beard in the sky.

He has a point. In Islam, the idea of "It is the will of god" is very strong, stronger then in most faiths. It is a fatalist attitude. Whatever happens has been pre-determined and it is useless to go against it.

It is kinda funny to see then Muslims use it when they go into war. Since Muslims always loose unless they fight each other (which is another kind of loosing), obviously the loosing is the will of god. Notice how the phrase "if Allah wants it" is rarely used AFTER the lost battle.

But are Christians and Jews really that different? Yes. A lot of the advancement in the west has been due to religion taking a back seat. Take Einstein, religious but doesn't let it control him. The west still has various religions but the advances were strongest when church and state or at least science and culture were separated.

Not that this has nothing to do with the faiths themselves. Fatalism is determined by environment. In Europe, the environment allows people to take charge. There are flooded areas but they are small and so you can build small raised areas to build your house on. And now your house doesn't flood away every year, you can start building dyke's. You can influence the environment in small ways, allowing you to build up to big ways. There is a reason the greatest land reclaimers are the dutch where doing it with primitive tools was relatively easy AND rewarding.

Fatalism is a survival strategy when your entire dependence is on a river that may or may not flood and which you can do nothing about. When a dry spell doesn't mean a lesser harvest but mass starvation. when all your work is wiped out in front of your eyes, it helps to think that it is all part of some divine plan. Raising your hands in anger at the gods... doesn't work for to long before you die of a heart attack. Just accept it, bury the death and move on.

And when YOU do that, when you have given up, it becomes VERY hard to accept someone else can move on. That is why in ghetto's there is enormous peer pressure NOT to succeed but to fail. Because if someone else CAN make it, then you are a bigger failure.

And that is another aspect of Islam. The world moved on and in general they can't move on. Look at Turkey, flexing its wings because it thinks that massive growth when you came from nothing has meaning it KNOWS it is completely at the mercy of the west. Every time a Turk answers his cell phone, uses his computer, powers a light, it is western tech. And despite billions invested from oil rich nations, this hasn't really changed.

Why? Because Islam never had a renascence. They never had an enlightenment. Individuals have moved on and learned to seperate faith from daily live but as a group, in general, it hasn't. And it is causing massive culture conflict.

Note the huge problems Israel is having because by its nature it has to be friendly to ultra-orthodox Jews.

In most of the west, the religious freaks have isolated themselves and good riddance. There is no Amish TV channel trying to win heart and minds. More or less, the US can ignore them. Good luck doing that with Islamic extremist. Note how the revolutions so far have not yet lead to a progressive government. Moderate muslims is about as good as it gets and moderate is a very inaccurate term. It completely depends on how extreme the non-moderates are.

Mind you, nothing of this is new. We had Darwin on trial. It is just annoying to have to fight the same battle over and over again. And last time we didn't insist on importing Hillbilly's by the truck load.

Culture clash sounds so harmless but it is the root at many of the worst moment in human history.

(AP) ? Egypt's military ruler warned of "extremely grave" consequences if the turbulent nation does not pull through its current crisis and urged voters to turn out for landmark parliamentary elections starting Monday.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi claimed "foreign hands" were behind the latest wave of unrest, an assertion similar to those made by Hosni Mubarak in his final days in power before he was ousted in a popular uprising in February. Tantawi was Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years.

In comments carried by the nation's official news agency, Tantawi rejected calls for him and other generals on the ruling military council he heads to immediately step down.

The warning came as thousands of protesters were filling Cairo's Tahrir Square for another massive demonstration to push for him and the other generals to immediately return to their barracks in favor of a civilian presidential council and a "national salvation" government to run the country's affairs until a president is elected. It was the ninth straight day of a revival of the protest movement that toppled Mubarak. At least 41 protesters have been killed in and more than 2,000 have been wounded, most of them in Cairo.

The military took the reins of power when Mubarak was ousted. But it has come under intense criticism for most of the past nine months for its failure to restore security, stop the rapid worsening of the economy or introduce the far-reaching reforms called for by the youth groups behind Mubarak's fall and the ongoing protest movement.

Tantawi said the military will follow through with its somewhat vague road map for handing over power. The ruling council never set a precise date for transferring authority to an elected civilian administration, only pledging that presidential elections ? the last step in the handover process ? will be held before the end of June, 2012.

"We will not allow troublemakers to meddle in the elections," he said. "Egypt is at a crossroads ? either we succeed politically, economically and socially or the consequences will be extremely grave and we will not allow that."

Tantawi also accused foreign powers he did not name of meddling in Egypt's affairs.

"None of this would have happened if there were no foreign hands," he said. "We will not allow a small minority of people who don't understand to harm Egypt's stability," he said, apparently alluding to the protesters in Tahrir, epicenter of the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak.

Retail stocks up after strong holiday weekend (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? After a blockbuster performance over the long Thanksgiving weekend, U.S. retailers now must replicate the robust results in order to see profitable sales gains for the rest of the holiday season.

Record numbers of shoppers spent billions of dollars in stores and online over the weekend on discounted televisions, toys and other goods. Stores opening earlier than ever, the usual deep discounts and more free shipping offers helped millions of shoppers shrug off economic concerns.

Best Buy Co Inc (BBY.N), Macy's Inc (M.N) and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) were seen by some analysts as strong performers over the big weekend. Shares of all three rose on Monday morning, with Macy's up as much as 5.3 percent.

Overall, the Standard & Poor's retail index (.RLX) rose 3.5 percent, outpacing the 3.1 percent increase in the S&P 500 (.SPX).

Nice weather across much of the country also helped. It was the warmest Black Friday weekend in five years, with the least snowfall since 1999. In terms of rainfall, it was the driest Black Friday in five years, according to Planalytics.

Special days, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, drew in shoppers this year and this past weekend was no different.

"Consumers have been waiting for sale days," said Fiona Dias, chief strategy officer at ShopRunner, a consortium of online retailers that offers members free shipping and returns. "So the peaks have gotten higher and the valleys have gotten lower."

On Monday, the spotlight shines on online sales. "Cyber Monday" is the biggest online shopping day of the year. Based on the growth seen over the weekend, especially among shoppers using their Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPads to make purchases, it is expected to be another banner year online. On Black Friday itself, U.S. online retail sales jumped 26 percent, comScore data showed.

Overall, Thanksgiving weekend sales soared 16.4 percent to $52.4 billion, the National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, said on Sunday.

Investors will get a more detailed reading of results later this week, when chains including Costco Wholesale Corp (COST.O), Macy's and Target Corp (TGT.N) issue their monthly sales tallies.

"I presume we're going to see strong numbers for November," said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Kenneth Stumphauzer.

Brian Sozzi, an independent analyst who follows retail stocks, said he expects many of those stocks to trade higher on Monday, but warned that discounts could come at a price for retailers.

"You have to remember that these were promotionally driven sales and there are still some margin issues," he said.

Wal-Mart was one of the clear winners, he said, along with Best Buy and even Wal-Mart rival Target.

"It's not an all Wal-Mart kind of world," Sozzi said.

Analysts cautioned that there could be a prolonged lull in sales until closer to Christmas.

Sozzi said he was looking beyond chains to other companies that likely benefited from retailers' sales, such as underwear and T-shirt maker Hanesbrands Inc (HBI.N).

"If Wal-Mart had such a strong performance in basic apparel ... you look at something like a Hanesbrands."

Black Friday deals are meticulously planned for months, but extended discounts were found across a wide range of apparel chains, which may suggest that early sales were coming in below plan, said Janney Capital Markets analyst Adrienne Tennant.

Chains such as Aeropostale (ARO.N), Gap Inc's (GPS.N) Banana Republic, bebe (BEBE.O), Charlotte Russe, Children's Place (PLCE.O), New York & Co (NWY.N), Pacific Sunwear (PSUN.O) and Chico's FAS Inc's (CHS.N) White House Black Market pushed their early deals throughout Friday, Tennant said.

At 9:30 a.m. on Friday, the Aeropostale store at Pennsylvania's big King of Prussia mall gave out makeshift coupons on paper, extending a 1:00 p.m. deadline for an additional 20 percent off to 5:00 p.m., and then that deadline was extended for the remainder of the day, Tennant noted.

Home Depot Inc (HD.N) may have had the upper hand among home improvement chains. Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter noticed people shopping across the store, while at Lowe's Cos Inc (LOW.N) they appeared to concentrate on the doorbusters such as $99 drills.

Both Home Depot and Lowe's shares moved higher on Monday.

The NRF expects sales for the November-December holiday shopping season to rise 2.8 percent, slower than the 5.2 percent jump seen in 2010 and roughly in line with the average growth of 2.6 percent seen over the past decade.

No more free infant formula at RI hospitals

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)

(AP) ? New mothers in Rhode Island will no longer leave the hospital with a free goody bag of infant formula.

To encourage breastfeeding, the state's seven birthing hospitals stopped formula giveaways this fall, apparently making it the first state to end the widespread practice.

State health officials hailed the decision Monday, noting that breastfeeding has been proved healthier than formula for both infants and mothers. Stephanie Chafee, a nurse and the wife of Gov. Lincoln Chafee, called the decision a critical step toward increasing breastfeeding rates.

"As the first 'bag-free' state in the nation, Rhode Island will have healthier children, healthier mothers, and a healthier population as a whole," Chafee said. "This is a tremendous accomplishment."

Formula will still be available to new mothers who experience difficulties with breastfeeding.

The new policy isn't intended to force women into nursing their children, according to Denise Laprade, a labor and delivery nurse and lactation consultant at Woonsocket's Landmark Medical Center, which eliminated free formula distribution last month. She said the focus is instead on parental education and helping mothers decide what's best for their child.

"We never make any woman feel guilty about her decision," Laprade said. She said she has received few complaints from parents about the new policy, though she said the older nurses needed a little time to adjust.

Thirty-eight percent of Rhode Island mothers nurse their babies six months after birth, compared with 44 percent nationally, according to a report issued this year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

State Health Director Michael Fine said the state hopes to raise the percentage of Rhode Island mothers nursing at six months to 60 percent by 2020.

Public health officials in Massachusetts endorsed a ban on free formula samples in 2005, but the regulation was rescinded by then-Gov. Mitt Romney before it took effect. Getting the new policy in place in small Rhode Island was easier, since it's not a law or regulation and required the agreement of only seven hospitals.

Nationally, about 540 of the nation's 3,300 birthing hospitals have stopped the formula giveaways, according to Marsha Walker, a registered nurse in Massachusetts and co-chairwoman of "Ban the Bags," a campaign to eliminate formula giveaways at maternity hospitals.

Walker said the bags given to new mothers ? typically containing a few days' worth of formula ? amount to a sophisticated marketing campaign by formula manufacturers.

"Hospitals should market health and nothing else," she said. "When hospitals give these out, it looks like an endorsement of a commercial product."

The International Formula Council, a trade group representing formula manufacturers, opposes the end of free formula samples. In a statement, the council notes that sample bags also include "key educational materials" on how to use and store formula.

"Mothers should be trusted to make good choices for their babies," the council said in its statement. "More than 80 percent of U.S. infants will be given formula at some point during their first year of life ... these educational materials are needed by the vast majority of mothers to ensure infant formula is prepared correctly and the baby's health is not jeopardized."

New mom Crystal Gyra said that while the new policy is well-intended, women should have the option of taking home formula samples. The Providence woman said she gladly accepted the free formula she received after giving birth to her daughter Gianna, now 2 months old. Gyra gives her daughter formula.

"It helped me," she said of the samples. "They should leave it up to the women to decide whether they want to take the samples or not. We're smart enough to figure it out."

Temporarily Paying More for Insurance Policies in ILITs

Unknown-2Many wealthy families have created irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs) where the trust owns the insurance policy as opposed to the retiree. The premiums are funded by regular gifts to the trust and this method shields heirs from the federal estate tax. Now that Congress has lifted the gift tax exemption to $5 million from $1 million, many people are carrying up to $4 million more than what they may need in life insurance and paying more in premiums than they need to be.?

Insurance advisors do not recommend winding down the ILIT because the gift tax could easily go back up in 2012. Advisors do recommend to regularly review the insurance in ILITs and sell it for something more appropriate if necessary.

See Scott Martin, Trust Advisors Flocking to Life Settlements for ILITs, Other Trusts, The Trust Advisor Blog, May 22, 2011.?

Special thanks to Jim Hillhouse (WealthCounsel) for bringing this article to my attention.

For NASA's rover Curiosity, it's 'Mars or Bust!'

NASA's rover Curiosity lifted off Saturday for its?354-million-mile cruise to Mars. After its nearly nine-month trip, the six-wheeled robot will descend to begin studying the environment for a better understanding of the red planet's history.

For NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity, it's "Mars or Bust!"

An Atlas V rocket carrying the one-ton rover to the red planet lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center at 10:02 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Saturday morning in a flawless launch.

Some 45 minutes later, a video camera aboard the rocket's upper stage captured farewell footage of the lander and its cruise stage as the package separated and headed for Mars.

A short time later, the payload phoned home to report that all its systems are functioning well.

IN PICTURES:?Exploring Mars

"Ecstatic is the word," said Doug McCuistion, who heads NASA's Mars exploration program, when asked for his reaction during a post-launch press briefing. "We have started a new era of exploration of Mars with this mission."

Up to now, NASA's program has focused on "following the water" with missions designed to reconstruct from the planet's minerals the history of a liquid essential to life as researchers currently understand it.

But water alone isn't enough, researchers say. Other environmental conditions come into play, conditions that govern the ability of organic building blocks for life to remain stable on the surface or underground, for instance.

The record of environmental conditions early in the planet's history, when it was thought to have been at its wettest, is believed to be written in the layers of rock the Mars Science Laboratory's team has identified in Gale Crater, a 100-mile-wide impact feature with a mountain that soars three miles high from the center of the crater's floor.

After an eight-and-a-half-month cruise, a nail-biting final descent aims to place the six-wheeled robotic chemist squarely in the crater.

If all goes well, Curiosity will initially spend 98 weeks traversing some 12 miles or more ? driving, drilling, then analyzing the drill tailings to help build a picture of the environments that existed at the location as the planet made the transition from a wet planet, to a periodically wet planet, to the desiccated orb humans are visiting today.

"This mission is an important next step in addressing the issue of life in the universe," says John Grotzinger, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif., and the project scientist for the Mars Science Laboratory.

This is the Earth Some time into the future. It has reshaped itself Into a new planet after being burned and scarred by the fires of nuclear war, and is once again beginning to look lush and green with life in certain areas. This is all thanks to its mysterious benefactors, Lord Time, and Mother Gaia. After joining together in holy matrimony, They had found a special man, and a special woman from the Earth, and awoke their genes. It was helped by the fact they had endured much radiation, but had a strange immunity to it since birth, this actually being a process that was changing them slowly into controllers of elements, in this case, Light, and Darkness.

Master Bright was the wielder of Light, and Lady Shade the wielder of Darkness. In turn they too decided two hands, no less under that of the Gods needed help. So Four Elements were made, Fire, Earth, Air, and Water, you get the idea. Four people were found with altered genes, enduring the same radiation immunity and being dubbed 'mutants' until they were given their amazing powers that they have today. Together they would spread the beliefs of Lord Time and Mother Gaia by the newfound religion of 'Shoushin.'

-The Four Lands-

These are the lands starting to show the rebirth of nature. Sengoku (Africa) and Shura (Eurasia) Are still wastelands.

North America Became known as 'Midorii' Land of the soil, with the strongest military known, as well as a place for knowledge and healing thanks to its universities. It has a mix of cities, and a beautiful countryside.

Image

South America Became 'Tenkuu' Land of the breeze. A Land inspired by ancient china, home to both common people like any other land, as well as jungle dwellers. It has scenic farms and produces most of the food. It is also the center of the martial arts world.

Image

Image

Australia became 'Akai' Land of the heat. Ruled in Monarchy/Aristocracy, it seeks to make itself look like ages such as The Roman/Greek Empires, The Renaissance, the 18th century, anything with class. It holds the best businessmen and women as well as most of the new world's inventions.

Image

Antarctica became 'Yuki' Land of the freeze. It was the most industrial and close to the cities of old, mass producing and putting to physical use, the work done by Akai's businessmen and inventions, along with the products of other lands. It rules currently with a sort of Democracy that still has a monarch ruler.

Image

Africa (Sengoku) and Eurasia (Shura) would remain uncontrolled, and giant areas of the wasteland that had to be taken over at some point. Until then, each of the four nations offered peace to its people and protection from outside bandits.

-

Lady Shade, who lived on a small island nation close to Australia, was the one to begin stirring up trouble: She would go on to realize each ruler had perfections and abilities she did not. Angered, she slowly visited their lands more often, turning them against one another, the four moving into Sengoku to lead their armies into battle.

The wandering Master Bright who desired no political power, but rather to walk the earth and do right was called upon to stop Lady Shade by any means. However, he was unable to do so, having fallen in love with her, and unable to harbor any violent feelings to any being. At this decision, they came up with the idea of finding one as noble as Bright, but with the spirit to fight, and grant him this power.

They found it in a traveling young man who was once formerly a monk, but had renounced his ways to battle in the apocalyptic land of Sengoku for the sake of the weak. Inspired by his courage, this hero was given the less known element of quintessence: neutral energy. Known once as Qi, Chi, Ki, etc. The force said to return balance where there was none. The young man had studied in the universities of Midorii, worked in the factories of Yuki, served the rich and the intelligent in Akai, and trained in martial arts in his homeland of Tenkuu.

The young man was given the mission of reuniting the war torn land, and to end the madness of Lady Shade, who plotted to selfishly take the world for herself. The final straw truly came though when Bright pleaded that Lady shade reveal the truth and stop the war from even happening, before being killed in cold blood, and Shade claiming Bright was trying to rape her after denying his feelings.

Prepare for battle.

-The Warlords-

Girls

1) Ningyo No Yuki -Water, Mermaid of the Snow Land-

The Princess of Yuki. A Demanding ruler that seems like a naggy wife, quick to get angry. She does her best to make life easy for her people, but it is difficult. And her people understand. But everyone outside of her land thinks working in her cities is like slavery.

She can only fire water blasts from the pores of her skin, like out the palms of her hands. This means she must drink, shower, etc often to absorb water. If she has too much excess water, she'll need to pee like crazy.

2) Shikaze No Tenkuu -Air, White Wind of the Air Land-

Princess of Tenkuu. A Laid back young lady raised since birth as a Jungle Girl, whose family was elected into the government. She is a most decent ruler, making easy taxes and throwing parties and festivals often. She is often confronted with the problem of bridging the gap between the fairly civilized jungle people and the more civilized regular people. She is one with nature due to the way she has lived, and the fact she uses air. Animals love her, and will protect her from any attacker.

She has to use breathing techniques to use air. In turn she can leap high into the air, move quickly, and, her best, and most offensive move, fire air bursts.

3) Kage No Gesshoku -Darkness, Shadow of the Eclipse-

Lady Shade. You already read her story. She has an island nation near Australia where she hides and waits. Beauty and superiority is her main concern. Her formal wear is black, but she prefers other colors. Pretty much the Villainess.

-Optional Weapon- Chain whip with the spiked ball of a mace at the end of the chain

Guys

1) Yaseijin No Akai -Fire,Wild Young Man of the Red Land-

A Snobby Hot-Shot who, as opposed to the Princess of Tenkuu, is absolutely lazy, and leaves the ruling up to his strict mother and siblings. He's a huge womanizer and partygoer, once even dating said princess of tenkuu before they had a bad breakup. He enjoys racing, gambling, that sort of thing. Deep down he can do the right thing. He just does stupid things first, never thinking before he acts. Ever since Master Bright died, he named himself as a Sun God, earning much more fear than admiration and respect.

He has a short temper which helps, because extreme emotion or stress activates his fire.

-Optional Weapon- Double Bladed sword

2) Yama No Midorri -Earth, Mountain of the Green Land-

A Gentle Giant who rules with a firm, but soft fist, balancing his land to have both farms and cities to help the other lands. He shares the land formerly known as America with the princess of tenkuu, dividing North And South into Midorii and Tenkuu. He has a deep love for creatures big and small, and will become enraged if someone hurts even something as small as a baby bird. He is often known to Shoushin Monks as the 'Mountain Golemn Saint,' given the image as the protector of Children, the man having fostered not only dozens of pets, but tons of orphans.

The earth comes magnetically to his hands. From there, he holds and lifts it all himself with his own strength. He can take blunt attacks well, but like any person, even his durable skin can be pierced, but that doesn't mean he feels much of the pain. this is why he is considered a Golemn.

3) Danketsu No Ki -Quintessence, Energy of Unity- (JayZeroSnake)

The Hero of the story. You know his backstory from above.
