Necrosis

Tiberius was sitting in his office. It was very...traditional. the four walls of the room were bolstered by the feeling like you were in the wilderness and in a log cabin. Isolated. Alone. On these wooden edifices were portraits of former Deans of course, to go along with such a 'rustic' appearance was a fireplace with a large mantle of carved marble that looked straight up like ivory and bone. It crackled and cackled to its master, begging his attention yet--Tiberius was much too drawn away for it. In return, the vermilon haze drifted over the dark wooden floors, over the antique Indonesian rug and over the furnishings of the room. The two leather upholstered chairs before a dark cherry stained desk that the Dean sat behind.

There was even a lounge chair where students could come to him to relax and tell him their worries. The Dean carried man responsibilities.playing a partial councilor was just one of them. Most did not remember what a 'Dean' really was in the first place, that it stemmed heavily from Clunic Reformed medieval monasteries.Where monks numbering in the thousands, large enough to fill a small college campus, and would be divided into ten. The title Dean stemmed from the Latin 'Decanus' meaning 'leader of ten'.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Tiberius Maximus Caine.

Tiberius' eyes fell into saccadic motion as his hand gripped the brush and with it, dunk it into an ebony pot of the more 'smooth' liquid paste known commonly as 'ink'. This ink, however, was a composite. Comprised of soot and animal glue. The same animal glue that was a protein colloid made from hydrolysis of the collagen of the skin, the bones and the tendons and other connective tissues. Most commonly it was a horse, however, this was a special glue. It reminded him of his latest kill. For very good reason too.

Making sure he had just enough, but not overly too much--scraping fine animal hairs along the inside of the delicate glass jar. The black ink had almost a red tinge to it. A sinister and grim fate his victim had fallen to. To fall so short of what was expected-- only the strong thrived in this world. If killing a man was tantamount to any grievous injury be it emotional, physical or mental then truly he was lost for the cause. If it equated the value of man--then he was paramount. Such was the machinations of this dismal world. And as he set the brush down against the solid sheet of parchment; hand fluidly devising each stroke carefully, with painstaking precision it became clear once again what he was.

A hunter. A killer of men. A manslayer. A murderer. A saint to some, and a dubious Armageddon to others.

Each stroke, every line of the calligraphic note he drew--each pulsated with the final moments of his victims thoughts. It begged at him, hearkened him to pull from this reverie he was slowly languishing in. He relished the ardor in secret. The precise moment when, he was God and could feel the life evaporate from another human being. It didn't come easily to him, not at first. But when Oblivion takes you, wraps you in its cold embrace. Any form of satisfaction becomes a lifelong dream.

He heard the knock at his door. The one that bore the prestigious gilded plate bearing his name. A name which, frankly, bothered him. For shadows had no names. They had no personalities, no feelings. They were whispers and rumors. They were, that feeling of constant dread in knowing there is nothing you could do to belay you own demise.

Calmly, he sat the brush in the jar. Rolled his parchment neatly, almost with an obessive-compulsory reaction, and slid from his chair and sauntered across the open room. His hand gripping the horizontal handle as he pulled it to. "Yes, how may I help you miss..?" It was a transient question deferring to revealing her name. Yet this one appeared, 'different' than the students he would normally associate with. Older perhaps, she carried her self with satisfaction with confidence rather than a girl who was insecure or..god forbid...'bitchy'.

Vizio's Google TV box emerges as the Co-Star Stream Player, goes up for pre-order in July with OnLive gaming

Vizio Co-Star hands-on

Remember the Vizio VAP430 Stream Player that we tried during CES? Half a year later, the Google TV hub is getting full launch details, just in time for Google I/O. Along with receiving the much more elegant title of Co-Star Stream Player, the set-top box now bakes in OnLive streaming game support -- the Co-Star could, in theory, replace a game console for any American with a good broadband connection. Whether or not playing Just Cause 2 on a TV is in the cards, the hub ticks all the 2012 Google TV checkboxes, including a hybrid keyboard and remote, 3D-capable 1080p video and DLNA media sharing. Before you rush to the local big-box store to pick one up, be warned that pre-orders don't start until July, and then only on Vizio's website. The $100 price, however, will make it considerably easier to wait.

How My Girlfriends and I Lose our Shirts Betting On Sports

?

?

?

?

There are a lot of similarities between betting on sports and the stock market. Both can be risky propositions, and making money is not always easy, but the goal in sports betting and stocks is to win (either by beating the market, or beating the bookie).

In the stock market, common mistakes can include ?speculating instead of investing? and ?using too much leverage?. A savvy bettor who knows the ins and outs of wagering and avoids common errors can certainly pull it off.

Precise play and using percentages in your favor is a great strategy, but only when you take common mistakes out of the equation.

Your strategy, analysis, and luck will ultimately determine your success, avoiding these mistakes will not only make you a better handicapper, but hopefully give you enough of an edge to turn losing bets into profitable ones.

1. Losing track of which team is better

It is highly fashionable for a bettor to analyze every statistical and psychological factor imaginable. Unfortunately, they often forget one basic fact; the best team is usually going to win. Not surprisingly, those better teams often cover the spread as well. That doesn?t mean you won?t cover some point spreads over the course of the year with inferior teams, but good teams win, and win handily.

Historically speaking, most teams with a winning record during a particular season also had a winning record against the spread for the year. Conversely, teams with a losing record generally didn?t cover the line too often.

2. Betting with your heart instead of your brain

If you ever want to?make money?betting on sports, you need to be sure you aren?t wagering as a fan. Your like or dislike for a certain player or team cannot enter into your thinking. In general, betting on or against your favorite team is going to leave you in a bad mood 75% of the time? How? If you bet on them and they lose, you will be mad that you lost money. If you bet against them, you are going to either be upset that they lost or upset that they won and cost you money. That leaves you a mere 25% chance of having a great day, and that is if you have bet on them and they won.

3. Chasing longshots

If you want to chase longshots, stick to horse racing. Yes, the payoff can be sweet if youwager?on that 14-point NFL or NBA underdog to win outright, but making this a regular part of your wagering tactics doesn?t make much sense. Occasional longshot wagers are fine, but remember, there is a reason they are such a huge underdog, and it?s not like you know something that the oddsmakers don?t.

4. Relying too much on trends

Just like with the stock market, past results don?t mean much in sports either. A historical trend between two teams can be an interesting side note, but it rarely has much to do with the current contest. So Team X has covered the spread against Team Y the last six times they have played; so what? Each game needs to be analyzed based on its own merit, taking only current player and team ability into account.

5. Getting too excited over a recent performance

Regardless of the sport, there is one truth that every smart bettor should keep in mind; a team is never as good as they look in victory, and never as bad as they look in defeat. Basically, a single exceptionally great or disastrously poor game shouldn?t detract from a team?s overall body of work. A team that gets hammered one game shouldn?t necessarily be written off for the next game. Not to mention that the line will adjust to that poor performance, making it more advantageous to wager on a team coming off a poor showing.

6. Becoming too enamored with offense

We have all heard the phrase ?Defense wins championships.? It is as true in sports betting as it is in the individual sport itself. For example, you wager on a basketball team and they can?t seem to make a bucket. If they are a solid defensive team, they can hang around until the offense wakes up. In baseball, teams that pitch well and play good defense will always be a few swings away from covering your?bet. It is true with every sport, yet bettors get hooked on teams that can light up the scoreboard. Well, what happens when they don?t?

7. Not shopping for lines

It is crucial to have multiple places to shop for lines. Lines can vary greatly from one oddsmaker to the next, so why not get as many points as you can with your selection? On the internet it?s as simple as having accounts with several sportsbooks. It doesn?t cost you anything to open an account, and there are several 3rd party payment processors that make it easier to move money around. If you?re in Las Vegas, it?s as simple as walking to the next casino or using an online service like VegasInsider.com or Covers.com to see which casino is offering the best line. A 6.5 versus 7.0 spread is HUGE, and can dramatically change your probability.

Speaking of lines?

8. Chasing line movement

This is all too common with inexperienced bettors. A line moves from 3 to 5 and the bettor jumps all over those 5 points, thinking it is a steal. That may be the case, but let me explain something. You are not betting against the bookmaker, you are betting against other bettors. Whoever you are placing your bet with has no interest in whether you win or lose. His take is the extra 10% (this number can vary) that you put up to place your bet. If a line is made at say 3 points, and 75% of bettors are betting on the favorite, the line will be moved to force people to bet the other side. Obviously, this can backfire if the outcome falls above 3 and below 5, but all they are trying to do is even out the betting and collect 10% from everyone.

9. Falling for ?free? picks

You have seen those ads in the back of the newspaper and on the internet, offering free sports picks. The regular cost of an expert pick with them is $24.99, but they are giving you a one-time complimentary pick; how wonderful right? Not so fast! Yes, you will get a free pick, but let me tell you how it works. They pick a random game and give 50% of the people who click or call one side, and the other 50% receive the other team. So, if 500 people take advantage of this free pick, 250 have scored. Maybe 100-150 of those will be so impressed that they will pay the $24.99 for another pick.

Of course, the same 50/50 tactic is used for that game, so 50-75 people are getting the next winner, and so on. A few lucky people will make a fortune, but at $24.99 each, you know who the real winner is.

10. Betting because you are bored

If you are that bored, read a book before throwing good money out the window. I get it; there is a nationally televised game and you want to sit down and enjoy the game with a six-pack, while also making a few bucks. That is a great idea, but unless you have put in the time to analyze the matchup, just like you would for other games, then it makes no sense to place a ?guess bet? on it. If you absolutely must have some action on the game, make a recreational bet that equates to about a quarter of your normal wager amount.

11. Wagering with a hangover

It has happened to everyone, so don?t feel bad. You stay out a bit too late enjoying some adult beverages with the boys and get home at about 3 a.m. Because of this, you wake up the next day about an hour before games are starting and have a splitting headache. Without a bit of analysis or research, you throw down your hard earned money and hope for the best. There is no need for it. The matchups and schedules for every sport are laid out well in advance, so there is no excuse for not having done your homework, then betting blind.

12. Chasing lost money

If you lose one bet, just double up on the next one right? If you lose again, just double it once more, and keep doubling until you win, right? Wrong! Trust me, if you get into a losing streak, you will run out of money before you run out of chances to double up. Each bet needs to be considered on its own merit, without any thought to past bets. Wagering on sports is often a lifetime investment and should be viewed on a larger scale and not on a wager by wager basis. A savvy (and successful) bettor has maturity, discipline, and a short memory.

13. Worrying too much about injuries

Some people base their entire betting strategy around injuries. That isn?t to say that an injury to a star isn?t important, because it certainly is, but the oddsmakers know the importance as well, and have already adjusted the line to reflect this. Plus, it?s not like teams play one guy short; there is always someone to replace that player, and he often turns out to be pretty good in his own right. Historically, when a line moves due to a key injury, the team that suffered the injury ends up covering the spread.

14. Placing too much emphasis on the psychological aspect of the game

Sit down and watch a few games in any sport and you will hear some common phrases uttered. ?Guy X is playing his old team and is really motivated.? ?Team Y is playing the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year and will be giving an extra effort.? It?s all rubbish. Effort and motivation count for something, but nothing beats pure talent. So what if a team lost by 30 points to their opponent last year. Are they really out for revenge? Perhaps the team that won last year is motivated to do it again and prove it wasn?t a fluke.

15. Wagering too much on a single game

A professional sports bettor wagers about the same amount on each game, give or take 10%. There is no ?lock of the day? in real-life sports wagering. You either like a game or you don?t. Losing a large amount on a single game will lead to a steady bet increase across the board, which can lead to a missed mortgage payment.

16. Not betting enough games

This probably doesn?t apply to a novice gambler, but for anyone who knows what they are doing, this makes perfect sense. If you have a system for handicapping and analysis, and you know it works, then betting just a few games leaves you more susceptible to luck. Weather changes, a few freak bounces and lucky plays here and there and you are staring at a bad day. If your analysis gives you seven games that you really like, by all means play them all. Just like the stock market, diversification is key to long term success.

17. Desperation wagering

This is the most dangerous type of wagering. The rent or mortgage is due, or your car needs $2,000 worth of repairs, so you turn to sports wagering to make ends meet. Sure, you may have a great day and pull it off. However, more likely is that you will wager on games that you haven?t properly analyzed, turning your $2,000 debt into a $4,000 debt.

18. Wagering beyond your means

Just like when you walk into a casino to play the slots or into the racetrack to play the ponies; wager what you can afford to lose. It may seem self-defeating, but assume you are going to lose. Hypothetically, if you were to lose every bet you make today, would it cause financial distress? Some people will bet two or three sports at a time and make 15 small wagers, with the thinking that they can?t possibly all lose. Unfortunately, they can all lose.

19. Focusing on exotic wagers

Horse racing has the Pick 5, Pick 6 and Superfecta, and sports wagering has teasers, parlays and futures. What do they have in common? A smart bettor avoids all of them. An occasional exotic play is alright, but since most of these wagers come down to guessing and luck, they are best left for others. Coincidentally in horse racing these are the types of wagers where the track get?s the highest take-out, in other words they make the most money.

20. Wagering on too many sports

Sports betting has more to do with ego than most people imagine, and I completely understand. We want to seem like an expert on every sport, so we spray wagers across a wide variety of contests. Sadly, no one is an expert on every sport. It is about making money, so keep track of your wagers and figure out which sports you excel at and which give you trouble. Concentrating on sports where you have proven success is just one more tip to bettering your chances at a fat bankroll.

Work Hard. Win Big!

So, what does this all mean? It means that if wagering on sports is considered merely ?entertainment? or ?fun? in your life, then you probably won?t be successful at it over the long haul. If that type of random entertainment appeals to you, and you can afford to lose, then by all means go for it. However, if you are serious about making money by wagering on sports, you have to view it as a job.

Investing the proper time and research is the first major key. And there are no guarantees in gambling, like everything in life. But avoiding the mistakes we?ve brought to light in this report will definitely increase your odds of making a substantial profit (and have some fun in the process).

Yan Wang receives award from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to support work on a new design for flow batteries that can be used to store electric energy produced by wind and solar power installations

Worcester, Mass. An innovative design developed by a researcher at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for flow batteriesrechargeable energy systems that can be used to store electric energy produced by wind and solar power installationshas received a 2012 Catalyst Award from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. The one-year, $40,000 award will support continued work on the new technology, which promises significantly higher energy and power density and longer cycle life than conventional flow batteries at a significantly lower cost.

In flow batteries, an electrolyte solution flows through an electrochemical cell that converts chemical energy to electricity. The flow can be reversed to store electric energy from the power grid as chemical energy. The innovation developed by Yan Wang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at WPI and director of the university's Electrochemical Energy Laboratory, replaces the electrolyte solutions typically used in flow batteries with thick suspensions containing particles of nickel and zinc.

Using these suspensions, Wang has been able to greatly increase the concentration of electrically active material in the solutions, resulting in about a 10-fold increase in energy density (the amount of energy that can be stored in a given volume) and about 2.5 times the power density (he amount of power that can be generated with a given volume of material) when compared with conventional flow batteries.

In a further innovation, the metal particles in Wang's suspensions also serve as the battery's anode and cathode (positive and negative terminals). This simplifies the battery's design, significantly lowering its manufacturing costs and extending its useful life. "Often," Wang said, "up to 50 percent of a battery's volume is packaging and other components. In our design, the metal particles take the place of those components, so the battery can be more compact."

Because the suspensions are water-based, the battery is also safer to operate than batteries that use organic chemicals, including lithium-ion batteries, Wang added.

With the Catalyst Award, Wang, his research team, and his collaborator, Diran Apelian, Alcoa-Howmet Professor of Mechanical Engineering at WPI and director of the university's Metal Processing Institute, will experiment with new formulations that will more effectively keep the heavy metal particles in suspension. They will also conduct experiments to measure the battery's performance and will build a working prototype. They ultimately plan to found a start-up company to commercialize the new battery technology.

"Right now, the ability to store and retrieve energy is the Achilles heel in the world of renewable energy," said Apelian, who founded WPI's Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, the nation's first materials recovery and recycling center. "By helping to address this challenge, Yan Wang's work will be critical to our nation's wellbeing. The work that he and our students are doing will make a huge impact. It is exciting for WPI to be part of this initiative, and to lead it."

Violence in a Rio slum turned a suburban pastor into an activist

Ant?nio Carlos Costa was happy as a pastor in suburban Rio de Janeiro. But violence in a city slum changed his life forever.

By Taylor Barnes,?Correspondent / June 22, 2012

Pastor Ant?nio Carlos Costa leads a Rio de Paz (?River of Peace?) protest over the lack of accountable policing in Niteroi, Brazil.

Police helicopters twirl ominously over a favela (slum) controlled by drug traffickers as elite police sharpshooters bang on doors and one by one enter each home in the community. The favela has been the site of weekly police incursions as a growing number of crack cocaine users congregate there and members of Rio's largest street gang move in ? pushed out of favelas elsewhere by new police units.

Ant?nio Carlos Costa, a bespectacled, gray-haired pastor in Converse high-top sneakers, strolls past the cops with a few volunteers from his middle-class church across town and residents of this favela. They decide to take an early lunch to wait out the police operation before returning to their project: cooking nutritious meals for crack addicts in the favela.

"When I come back from a prison or a place like this favela, and I tell the other pastors what I've seen, and they don't take action, it gives me such fury," Pastor Costa says. "The church doesn't even know how the state works. They think that politics is necessarily dirty."

Costa leads a growing ad hoc group of church members and nonreligious allies whose goal is to protest violence and address the inequality and neglect behind it in Rio de Janeiro.

The numbers here are staggering: Brazil has the most murders of any country in the world, tallying 43,909 in 2009, ahead of India (40,752) and Russia (15,954). Half a million Brazilians have been murdered in the past decade. The state of Rio de Janeiro has a homicide rate of 30 per 100,000 residents. (By contrast, the global average is less than 7 per 100,000 residents. In New York State the number is 4 per 100,000.)

Police confrontations like the one Costa passed through add to the toll. Rio has averaged one killing a day by police so far in 2012 ? and that's down from more than three a day in 2007.

That's why Costa began what has become one of Rio's most respected and visible human rights and protest movements. In a city where political apathy is the norm, Rio de Paz ("River of Peace") has become a regular in the local news media as it calls together volunteers wielding Brazilian flag-colored brooms to protest state corruption. The volunteers also place thousands of crosses and roses across the Copacabana beach to symbolize the number of homicide victims and have had a thousand people lay down in black outfits along the beachside.

After an adolescent boy went missing last July following a police shootout with alleged drug traffickers in the oft-forgotten western suburbs of Rio, Rio de Paz protested for days on end with "Where is Juan?" signs on the beach. The boy's body was found more than a week after his disappearance ? dumped in a river near a police station with a bullet in his body that was traced to an officer who already had 13 on-duty killings to his name.

Personal Development in Religion and Science | James Reilly

Hello, thanks for visiting James Reilly Blog

Religion, science and personal development all share the same goal ? to elevate mankind above his current circumstances. We once used religion to increase our spiritual understanding and science to develop our knowledge of the world. However, many people are now using personal development to do both!

Personal development has, in the past, been a luxury pursuit of the rich, famous or dedicated seeker. However, as we find ourselves firmly planted in the 21st Century personal development is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury.

The term Personal Development has historically been a lose term used to describe the development of yourself in some area or field of expertise. However, in this day and age, it really refers to creating the type of self improvement at a mental, emotional and spiritual level that can create real positive physical changes in character and life experience.

As the fear-mongers and financial elite continually drive home the concept that we are entering the worst recession in a hundred years it is now more than ever that we need to launch ourselves on the personal development trail. It is your responsibility to rise above the controlled collective consciousness of lack and embrace the truth that we are all connected and have access to unlimited supplies of everything!

Quantum physics is continually pushing past the old boundaries imposed by outdated science and showing us the way. This new scientific field is experimenting with, and proving the existence of, the energy field that binds all matter and from which everything, animate and inanimate, takes its form.

How does this discovery connect to personal development?

Well religious, metaphysical and esoteric texts have always told us that we are all connected and that there is only one God who is spiritual in nature. We have been told that we are given dominion over life itself. Jesus told us that we are the temple of the living God. Buddha became conscious of his connection with God. We are told that God is spirit and permeates all things. If you believe that there is only one God and that he permeates everything in existence then you must also believe that everything takes its form from this one God. That means that there can only be one true consciousness in existence ? God!

Personal growth and self improvement begins with the premise that we are all connected within one mass of vibrating energy. Most self Improvement tools begin with this premise and mould their approaches around it. However, we always remain a part of the whole and cannot escape that, no matter how hard we try.

Science is now confirming that all these beliefs are true. Quantum theory postulates that this energy field, or divine matrix, is the starting point of all matter. In fact matter, or material objects, are just small packets of energy, within this one energy field, that group together to form things!

A great deal of research and a varied group of truth-seeking scientists have discovered strong evidence to suggest this matrix is composed of electromagnetic energy. We can ascertain then that everything that exists has electromegnetic properties. It is also being shown that our thoughts are composed of the exact same electromagnetic properties as the very energy field in which we live, move and have our being!

Electromagnetic properties are similar to other forms of magnetism ? magnetic! Therefore, if your thoughts are magnetised to this matrix of energy, which is the fabric of reality as we know it, and physical objects are part of this matrix then you can use your thoughts to attract things! Thoughts become things!

It is the aim of personal development to allow you to use this knowledge to change your life by giving you practical tools for achieving your goals. The reason why it is so hard for most of us to grasp this concept, never mind use it to our advantage, lies in the fact that most of our life experiences and material objects are created and attracted to us by our subconscious thoughts. It is the automatic thoughts you think that are responsible for creating your life! Most of these thoughts are negative in nature.

To truly elevate yourself above the collective consciousness and become the master of your own life you must fully embrace this axiom. It is necessary to find and then eliminate the negative thoughts and beliefs you hold that have held you back from achieving your dreams. Personal development is just a tool to achieve this. Use it to alter your automatic thinking. Then you will be free to consciously think yourself into any life you desire!

Over the past five seasons of "Jersey Shore," we have witnessed both Snooki and JWoww have their fair share of guy drama. There have been plenty of tears and fights, but now both girls seem to have found their own Prince Charmings.

Fans were introduced to JWoww's boyfriend Roger Mathews and Snooki's fiancé Jionni LaValle on "Jersey Shore," but with the girls' upcoming spin-off "Snooki & JWoww," fans will get to know them on a more personal level.

"It's drama, I tell you there's a lot going on with Roger and Jenni," Snooki recently told MTV News. "I'm excited to watch it ... and I was there."

So what kind of drama will JWoww and Roger bring to the show?

"We have a couple fights, it's pretty amusing now that we're over them," JWoww said. "It's just typical relationship ... me and him are hotheads. We go from zero to sixty, and he's the first boyfriend that I've ever had that won't back down ... Roger's like 'you're out of your mind.' You kinda saw it last season when I tried to give him sh-- and he was like, 'I don't know who you think you're talking to.' "

On the other hand, it seems like there's no trouble in paradise for Snooki and LaValle, who are expecting their first child, a baby boy, in September.

"Me and Jionni, we are in the honeymoon stage," Snooki said. "We're in love with each other, we try not to fight as much as possible because we are having a child, we are just trying to get the environment safe for our baby and just have a good relationship."

Snooki and JWoww are moving to Jersey City, New Jersey, on the new show, which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. And just because they're inseparable doesn't mean they won't deal with their own drama this season.

"We get annoyed with each other a little bit because we are like sisters so we know when to back off," Snooki said. "But you know, we did have a little fight that you'll see and we both feel really stupid about it. I don't even want to bring it up, it's embarrassing because we both were just on different pages."

Are you excited for "Snooki & JWoww"? Let us know in the comments.

Lance Armstrong. Not even prosecuted. A two-year, multi-continent investigation brought to a close this year with no charges filed.

Now Roger Clemens. Acquitted on all counts. A five-year investigation ended with the top pitcher of his generation celebrating with family hugs inside the courtroom.

After three expensive failures, the government is done, it seems, with the business of pursuing high-profile cases of drugs-in-sports ? with a track record not worth bragging about.

"It was a tremendous waste of federal resources," said Stanley Brand, a long-time Washington defense attorney who was counsel to the House of Representatives from 1976 to 1983. "The juries that acquitted these people weren't persuaded by any of this. That's the man on the street."

With the government striking out yet again, the policing of drugs in sports now falls to other entities. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency filed formal accusations last week against Armstrong that could strip the cyclist of his seven Tour de France victories. Armstrong denies any doping.

Clemens, 49, was acquitted Monday on all six counts that he lied to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. The government had been pursuing him since 2007, when he was first mentioned in the Mitchell Report on drug use in baseball, and he famously and vehemently disavowed any link to steroids and human growth hormone at a nationally televised hearing in 2008.

Clemens' lawyers derided the hearing as a "show trial," and even some members of Congress at the time questioned the validity of the proceedings. But then-President George W. Bush had made the problem of drugs in sports a talking point ? even mentioning it in his State of the Union address in 2004. The FBI and Justice Department pursued a perjury case against the former pitcher that eventually involved 93 federal agents and officers. It carried over into the Obama administration, albeit without the head of the Justice Department's criminal division, who stayed out of the case because he had represented Clemens at the hearing.

Attorney General Eric Holder also took no part in the case because he had worked at a firm representing Clemens.

Brand questioned why the aggressive federal investigators weren't reined in.

"Where was the adult supervision from the Justice Department to control these individual prosecutors from trying to make hay out of things that didn't fit the big picture?" he said. "They contorted federal statutes to try to convict these guys."

In the end, the government could only find one person who could claim firsthand knowledge of Clemens' using performance-enhancing drugs. He was a flawed witness, something even prosecutors acknowledged. Longtime strength coach Brian McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with HGH in 2000, but his story changed over the years and his only physical evidence was kept haphazardly in a beer can.

Yet the case came to trial. The public perception that the government had better things to do was evident during jury selection, when many prospective jurors felt the congressional investigation was a waste of taxpayer money. One man used the word "excessive" to describe the 2008 hearings ? and he actually made it onto the final panel of 12 jurors.

The trial that lasted into its 10th week yielded less than 10 hours of deliberation over several days. After the jury foreman uttered "not guilty" for the sixth and final time, Clemens teared up. He and his four sons gathered in the middle of the courtroom, arms interlocked, like football players in a huddle. Then Clemens kissed his wife, Debbie, who was a defense witness in the case.

When Clemens went outside to speak to reporters, he fought hard to hold back tears.

"I put a lot of hard work into that career," said Clemens, who won 354 games in 24 seasons with the Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays and Astros and took home an unprecedented seven Cy Young Awards. "And so again I appreciate my teammates who came in and all the emails and phone calls. Thank y'all very much."

Clemens was charged with two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing Congress. He did not take questions after his brief statement.

The jury of eight women and four men declined comment through a court spokesman. One juror, however, told the New York Daily News the panel was troubled by the prosecution's reliance on McNamee. "We just could not believe that they even called their key witness, the drug dealer," Joyce Robinson-Paul said.

Defense lawyer Rusty Hardin said Tuesday that the jury, in interviews after the verdict, made clear that Clemens didn't get off on a technicality. "They are convinced he did not use performance-enhancing drugs at any time in his career," Hardin told CNN.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia issued a statement thanking the jury and respecting the judicial process, but it will be hard for prosecutors to put any kind of positive spin on another disappointing Justice Department outcome.

The investigation into Bonds yielded a guilty verdict on only one count of obstruction of justice in a San Francisco court last year, based on an evasive answer he gave about injections. The jury deadlocked on whether Bonds lied to a grand jury when he denied knowingly taking performance-enhancing drugs. He was sentenced to 30 days of house arrest and two years of probation; the sentence was suspended pending an appeal.

The Clemens outcome also comes on the heels of the Justice Department's failure to gain a conviction in the high-profile corruption trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards.

In addition, the first attempt to try Clemens last year ended in a mistrial when prosecutors played a snippet of video evidence that had previously been ruled inadmissible.

"I think he's gone through enough," said former Virginia Rep. Tom Davis, who was the top Republican on the House Government Reform Committee when Clemens testified in 2008. "We did the appropriate thing in referring it over to Justice. But hopefully this will put it behind him. He's a good citizen."

The panel's chairman at the time, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., also defended the decision to refer the conflicting testimony it heard to the Justice Department, but said, "Whether Mr. Clemens committed perjury is a decision the jury had to make and I respect its decision."

This may well be the end of an era in which sports stars are prosecuted for getting involved with performance-enhancing drugs, said Ty Cobb, a former coordinator of the Justice Department's Mid-Atlantic organized crime and drug enforcement task force.

But Cobb, a long-time Washington defense attorney and a distant relative of baseball Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, felt the cases against Bonds and Clemens were warranted. "Lying to Congress is a serious matter. Lying to a grand jury is a serious matter, and the Justice Department should pursue those crimes without fear of losing when they think they occurred," Cobb said.

Clemens' lawyers contended that the pitcher's success resulted from a second-to-none work ethic and an intense workout regimen dating to his high school days. They said that Clemens was indeed injected by McNamee ? but the needles contained the vitamin B12 and the anesthetic lidocaine and not performance-enhancing drugs.

Said Hardin: "This trial was the first chance we had to let somebody on his behalf question the accusations and what we knew were the wrong perceptions of him as a person. It got to where people thought arrogance was a man saying, 'I didn't do it.' When a man says he didn't do it, let's at least start out giving him the benefit of the doubt."

As for Clemens, the verdict is unlikely to settle the matter in sports circles as to whether he cheated in the latter stages of a remarkable career that extended well into his 40s ? during a period in which performance-enhancing drug use in baseball was thought to be prevalent. Clemens himself told Congress at the 2008 hearing, "No matter what we discuss here today, I'm never going to have my name restored."

A crucial barometer comes this fall, when his name appears on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time. His statistics would normally make him a shoo-in for baseball's greatest honor, but voters have been reluctant to induct premier players ? such as Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro ? whose careers were tainted by allegations of drug use.

"I hope those in the public who made up their minds before there was a trial will now back up and entertain the possibility of what he has always said ? using steroids and HGH is cheating," Hardin said, "and it was totally contrary to his entire career."
