Some Background Information On Laminate Flooring | Home ...

Laminate flooring was originally developed by Perston AB Company from Sweden. The first lamination was applied by laminating the decorations on the plates. Then, the idea was reached toward Europe market in the late 1980 until the floor lamination was developed and disseminate to East and Midwest America. The new high technology was used and applied to laminate a floor where new style and other new product line of floor cover were also introduced. Asian countries also adapted the laminate flooring on year 2000 where Perston AB Company became?Pergo?Inc.

The process of lamination is easy to learn. This is why manufacturers of this kind of flooring increase greatly. By simply putting two or more layers where materials gathered and combined to form with simple floor cover. The wooden part needs to be strong, hard, and unbreakable. The other part is a layer on where to put all your creativeness in art to look it nice and beautiful result. The final touch requires smooth to make it shinny and balance of its components to make it perfect surface.

The competition of company is also high for such a product that is in demand nowadays. New style and creativeness of manufacturing this kind of flooring is competing to catch the attention of the big market. Different strategies are also strongly used, not just to give their best but also offer other benefits to customers. Like the durability, the floor appearance where layers decoration will be enticing to the eye of buyer, and the cost that fits the quality of such?laminate flooring.

Different flooring can be installed easily by using some adhesive chemicals. In processing this kind of flooring, the factory must also analyze how it would cause risk to the environment. It is not always the sense of selling and being a productive brand or product, but also the social responsibility in producing such flooring should be guarded. Because different way of laminate flooring requires different materials to be in used, that will also affect the human?s health and the environment.

Laminate flooring is such a desirable product compared to other products. To compare this to a carpet, the period of time to use and how you clean up your mess, especially liquid components is incomparable, where cleaning a carpet is time consuming. ?Aside from that it is easy to install. Maintaining the cleanliness is also easy and this laminate flooring would also give additional beauty and an elegant look inside your home.

The Who, One Direction in all-ages Olympic closer

LONDON (AP) ? "I'm talking 'bout my generation," sang The Who, capping a raucous, rock 'n' roll Olympic closing ceremony

But which generation? When the band members first sang "My Generation," they were in their 20s. Now they are pushing 70.

Like the Olympic torch passing from one runner to another, the London games' closing ceremony was an all-ages affair designed to show the flame of British creativity leaping from one age group to the next.

The 21-year-old singer Ed Sheeran sang "Wish You Were Here" with members of Pink Floyd and Genesis. Jessie J belted out "We Will Rock You" with Queen's Brian May. The Kaiser Chiefs played The Who's "Pinball Wizard."

The Spice Girls took us back to the "Cool Britannia" 1990s and the Pet Shop Boys to the synth-loving 1980s.

A ceremony that director Kim Gavin called an "elegant mashup" of music and creativity was designed to show that the British Invasion never ended, thank you very much.

"It's about how good British music is in the world, and how global it is," Gavin said a day before the ceremony.

So there was Annie Lennox and George Michael, who got their start in the 80s ? but the roars that greeted Michael's "Freedom" and Lennox's "Little Bird" suggested both are still going strong.

If that was too old hat, there was One Direction, boy band of the moment, as well as Tinie Tempah, Jessie J and Taio Cruz ? who performed their own songs, then a Bee Gees track from the golden age of disco.

There was Elbow ? the kind of serious band music journalists love ? as respite for those who probably found the rest a bit cheesy.

And if that was all insufficiently quirky, there was a brass band playing Madness; a Guards band in scarlet tunics and bearskin hats playing Blur; and Monty Python's Eric Idle singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" accompanied by centurions, bagpipers and roller-skating nuns.

We heard the voices and songs of the departed ? Queen's Freddie Mercury singing "Bohemian Rhapsody," Liverpool choirs performing John Lennon's "Imagine."

There were some notable absences: No Rolling Stones ? the band said they were out of practice. No Elton John, although he did record one of the official games anthems. There was a David Bowie montage, but no Bowie in person.

It wasn't just about the music. Gavin said he wanted to show how "U.K. culture, media, music are locked together to create the next big thing."

So there was a nod to Britain's scandal-tarred but vibrant press, in the newsprint-covered landmarks and vehicles of the opening scene.

There was fashion. We saw 1960s Mods, whose sharply tailored look can be seen in the modern designs of Tom Ford and others. There were images of supermodels in designs by Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen ? and Victoria Beckham, now a designer as well as a Spice Girl.

One of the models was even a Jagger ? Georgia May Jagger, daughter of Rolling Stone Mick.

The show rocked the 80,000 spectators inside Olympic Stadium, but didn't get rave reviews from those watching on TV. Some found it too kitschy, or too incomprehensible ? youngsters wondering who Ray Davies was, parents scratching their heads at One Direction.

The sarcastic spirit of many British Twitter users ? banished for two weeks by the Olympic feel-good factor ? was back with a vengeance.

"Embarrass a generation," tweeted film critic Dave Calhoun in a play on the games' official motto: "Inspire a Generation."

That Olympic slogan could also sum up the ceremony's ethos.

Or perhaps, to misquote The Who, the kids are alright ? and their parents are, too.

(AP) ? Jessica Ennis won the Olympic heptathlon gold medal on Saturday, the first for Britain on the track at the London Games.

Ennis started with a record in the hurdles and finished it off almost 36 hours later with an 800-meter run that was more like two victory laps of the packed, 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium.

Ennis went into the last of her seven events with a lead of 188 points over Austra Skujyte of Lithuania and extended her margin by winning the last race in 2 minutes, 8.65 seconds.

She posted a total of 6,955 points, a British record. World champion Tatyana Chernova of Russia, a strong second-day performer, initially was classified in second place and Lyudmyla Yosypenko of Ukraine was third but the results were later changed after a protest.

Lilli Schwarzkopf of Germany was promoted to silver with 6,649 points and Chernova was demoted to third place, still with 6,628 points.

Yosypenko of Ukraine finished fourth with 6,618.

Schwarzkopf finished in fourth place in the 800 but was initially disqualified for running outside her lane. She was reinstated following a protest before a counter-protest from the Ukrainian team was rejected.

The capacity crowd went wild as Ennis collapsed over the line. She sobbed at the end, then carried a Union flag around the track.

Ex-federal prosecutor to probe Colo. shooting

DENVER (Reuters) - The University of Colorado has hired a former federal prosecutor to probe its handling of a former graduate student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 in a shooting spree at a movie theater in a Denver suburb, the school said on Friday.

Robert Miller was retained to conduct an internal review of the university's dealings with accused gunman and former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes, the university said in a written statement.

Holmes was charged this week with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder for the shootings at the July 20 midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado.

Questions have arisen about what the university knew about Holmes' mental state in the weeks leading up to the massacre.

His attorneys said a court filing that he was a patient of Dr. Lynne Fenton, a psychiatrist who is medical director for student health services at the university's Denver campus.

The judge presiding over the case has imposed a gag order preventing involved parties from publicly discussing the case, but Fox News, citing an anonymous source, reported that Holmes had sent a notebook, which was not opened, to Fenton detailing his plans for the massacre.

Also citing anonymous sources, the Denver Post reported Thursday that Fenton had notified the school's threat assessment team about behavior by Holmes, 24, that she found alarming.

Miller is a former U.S. Attorney and Judge Advocate General for the U.S. Air Force who is now in private practice.

"They have been asked to assess various university systems, procedures and actions related to the suspect," the university said.

The review, which began last week, was requested by University of Colorado Denver chancellor Donald Elliman, who earlier said he believed university personnel "did what they should have done" in dealing with Holmes.

"Our resolve rests with understanding all the facts so we can assist law enforcement and other authorities in ensuring that justice prevails," Elliman said in a statement announcing the review.

The university put no timeline on Miller's report, and said it is unclear how much of the information it could release publicly because of the gag order and student privacy laws.

Holmes, who authorities say told police that he was the Joker, in reference to Batman's comic-book foe, is being held in solitary confinement and without bond in the Arapahoe County jail.

PFT: DeSean to Reid: Don't take me off punt returns

Derrick ColemanAP

If somebody tells Derrick Coleman he doesn?t have much of a shot in Vikings camp, he won?t hear it.

Not because he?s unwilling. Because he can?t.

The undrafted rookie running back from UCLA has the added challenge of being hard of hearing, requiring effort most players don?t have to expend, just to know what play to run.

?I never let it hold me back,? Coleman told Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. ?Not once.?

Coleman was diagnosed with the condition, caused by a missing gene, when he was 3 years old. He wears hearing aids, but any situation with a lot of ambient noise (like a football game), renders them not much help and requires him to read lips. Sometimes in a huddle, that means grabbing the quarterback after a play call to double-check. He told Scoggins he only had three communication problems on the field, and two of them were as a high school freshman.

?I always know what the play is going to be,? he said. ?I don?t move until the ball moves so I shouldn?t have a false-start incident.?

His parents never let him use the condition as a crutch, and to this day he?s become a master at adapting. He wears a pair of skull caps under his helmet; one to keep his hearing aids dry and one to keep them in his ears.

He?s also been willing to talk to hearing-impaired students, trying to erase any stigma bullies might latch onto by pointing out that kids with less-than-perfect sight wear glasses all the time.

?It really serves as an inspiration to those kids because what happens is those kids tend to go into their own shell,? said Coleman?s father, Derrick Sr. ?They think, ?Well, I?m different. I?m not like the other kids.? Derrick helps dispel that.?

Whether he makes the Vikings roster or not, that makes Coleman?s story worth following, and admiring.

Controlling gene expression with hydrogen peroxide 'switches'

Thursday, August 2, 2012

Hydrogen peroxide doesn't just come in bottles from the drugstore ? the human body makes it as well. Now researchers from North Carolina State University have found a way to use naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide inside cells to switch on gene expression. Their method also serves as a highly sensitive hydrogen peroxide detector, which may help scientists determine the molecule's role in cellular health and disease.

In a normally functioning cell, hydrogen peroxide serves as a messenger, carrying signals through a cell in order to allow the cell to respond to external stimuli or events. Once the message is transmitted, the hydrogen peroxide diffuses and disappears.

"It's an ideal messenger compound, because it's small, fast, and doesn't linger," says chemist Alex Deiters. "It works by oxidizing, or modifying, certain amino acids in proteins, which affects the protein's function."

Deiters and graduate students Jeane Govan, Andrew McIver and Chad Riggsbee wanted to see if they could harness hydrogen peroxide's oxidizing property as a way to control gene expression, using the gene that gives fireflies their "glow," or luminescence, as a test case. They designed a molecule that was sensitive to hydrogen peroxide and enabled expression of the firefly luciferase gene in live mammalian cells. When hydrogen peroxide was present, the luciferase gene was expressed, causing the cell to glow.

The researchers' results appear online in Angewandte Chemie.

"The exciting aspects of this synthetic gene switch are that you can use it not only as a way to detect the presence of hydrogen peroxide within cells, in this case, by making cells containing hydrogen peroxide glow, but also to express any gene of interest in response to the presence of hydrogen peroxide," Deiters says. "In terms of detecting hydrogen peroxide, the system is at least an order of magnitude more sensitive than anything used previously."
